Let's Be Honest - And Fair

December 18, 2017

I think we can all agree that the sexual assault issue is a very volatile and emotional one.

As was predictable, the issue has spiraled into a maelstrom that has gained mind-boggling speed.

Before I get a barrage of rebuttals to this piece, let me say I am in no way defending inappropriate behavior by neither men nor women. The issue has slated toward men, but inappropriate behavior is inappropriate behavior and it should know no gender. That should be a settled issue.

I mentioned in an earlier letter that we sorely need a definition for “sexual assault.” There seems to be no movement in that direction, and that’s par for the course in Washington. The politicians are more pre-occupied with petty partisan accusations than they are with issues like this that are culture-altering. So, until we get a definition we will continue to wallow in innuendo and anonymous accusations that can result in broken homes, career and reputation destroyers, and worse. A Kentucky lawmaker committed suicide after being accused.

There is no question that we are going through a long overdue cultural shift, but let’s not destroy lives because of unsubstantiated and open-ended accusations while there is no definition for the action being claimed.
