The Brevard Blue Devil Tennis Team

For the past four years, three things have been certain – death, taxes and the Brevard Blue Devil tennis team making a run to the state finals.

Nothing changed in 2017, as the Blue Devils put together one of their finest seasons to sweep through the conference, continuing that dominant play all through the playoffs for a rematch of the 2016 state title match against the N.C. School of Science and Math.

Unfortunately, the trip to Greensboro didn't result in a championship trophy, but there was plenty of success to look back on in 2017.

Brevard entered the season without its top player and reigning 2A state champion Joseph Schrader, who made a bid to go pro during his senior year before ultimately joining the N.C. State Wolfpack.

That meant every player had to move one spot up in the lineup, but that didn't cause Brevard to falter all season.

There were also individual accomplishments to enjoy.

The duo of Liam Baer and Cam Wilson earned the 2A doubles title after defeating the same team from Carrboro who they lost to in 2016.

They won the first set 6-4 and dropped the second set 6-3, but wouldn't be denied in the end, as they took the final set for the victory.

The Blue Devils will go into 2018 without two of their starters from 2017, but should have plenty of up-and-coming talent to keep Brevard as one of the elite 2A teams in the state down the road.
