Members of Trout Unlimited will present some of their fly-tying techniques.

The Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited opens its slate of 2018 meetings on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m. in the DFR Room in downtown Brevard.

Following a brief presentation by chapter members Zoe Mihalas and Alleigh Raymond detailing their experience at last year's national TU Teen Summit, attendees will have the opportunity to visit with a number of experienced fly tyers from the area who will be on hand to tie some of their favorite flies for fishing here in the waters of Western North Carolina.

Novice and accomplished tyers will benefit from learning new tricks and techniques and will pick up tips for making their tying better, more efficient and more satisfying. The meeting will also be of interest to non-tyers as they learn more about how flies are created and fished, and might even catch the tying bug themselves.

Local legends Heath Cartee, Justin McEntire, Landon Lipke, Dave Bender, Allen Broyhill and Mike Mihalas are confirmed as presenting tyers, with more to come. Many of the presenters are professional guides and have a wealth of knowledge about our area's fisheries and the flies and techniques that are successful here.

All Pisgah TU members and visitors are encouraged to bring along a vise, work light, tools and supplies and join in the fun by tying up personal favorites and specialties to share with the crowd.

In addition to the tying presentations, the chapter will host an informal "swap meet" for tying supplies, tools and other gear. Members and guests alike are invited to load up a container with unused items and bring them in to swap with others in attendance.

Pisgah TU meets regularly on the second Thursday of every month except December, July and August at the DFR Room, 36 E. Main St. in downtown Brevard starting at 7 p.m. Many attendees arrive early to enjoy a beverage and social time prior to the meeting.

Membership in Trout Unlimited is not required for attendance and there is no charge to attend the meeting. All meetings of Pisgah TU are free and open to the public.
