Put People Ahead Of Train Depot

January 29, 2018

A couple of weeks ago I received a letter from Mayor Harris encouraging residents to donate money to re-open a train depot in Transylvania County that was torn down some years ago. Initially, I reacted with disbelief because I couldn’t believe that a train depot seemingly took priority over the countless homeless residents and impoverished individuals living in Transylvania County. In my opinion, it would seem almost selfish to re-build a train depot before taking care of our fellow Transylvanians.

How does a train depot take priority over the estimated 3,400 students on free/reduced lunch? How does it take priority over The Haven, The Bread of Life, or SAFE? The local public school system? That money could be used to fund more vital programs and organizations. Institutions like SAFE, The Haven and The Bread of Life are operating thanks to countless volunteers. These organizations could benefit greatly from extra funding, no matter how little.

I am aware that the rebuilding of the train depot would bring in more tourists, as well as stimulate the local economy, but I feel that the well-being of the county’s residents should come first.

Many of us, including myself, don’t have to worry about where our next meal is coming from, but a lot of people in this county do. Those people should come before a monument that holds a personal sentimentality. It can wait, but our people can’t.

I am speaking for and on behalf of a community that I love very much. I want to encourage Mayor Harris, as well as other officials, to please reconsider this proposal. I also want to encourage them to support more vital issues within the community. They have the power to speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves. Please be a voice for those less fortunate.

As the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
