When Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest opens with lifeguards on Memorial Day this spring, there will be an increase in the entry fee from $2 to $3 per person.

The fee last increased from $1 to $2 in 2014. The slide is open year round to the public, but it is only staffed between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Pisgah Hospitality, LLC, took over management from the nonprofit Cradle of Forestry Interpretive Association (CFAIA) on Jan. 1.

The CFAIA has managed sites in Pisgah since 1988 and is separate from the Cradle of Forestry in the national forest.

Pisgah Hospitality will manage what has been called the "Pisgah Complex" - the Davidson River Campground, Lake Powhatan Recreation Area, North Mills River Campground, Sunburst Campground, Upper and Lower Cove Creek, Kuykendall, White Pine Group Site, Sliding Rock, Hard Times trailhead in Bent Creek, Wash Creek horse campground and the Art Loeb Trailhead at the Davidson River.

According to Pisgah District Ranger Dave Casey, the CFAIA was authorized to operate and maintain the Pisgah Complex under a concession campground special-use permit.

The three-year average estimated revenue of the concession permit on the Pisgah District is roughly $1.2 million.

Casey said that there was no opportunity to renew the CFAIA contract since the concession special-use permit was initially issued for a minimum of five years and maximum of 10 years.

At the end of that period, a new prospectus was issued to solicit applications, a requirement for concession operations of government owned improvements and facilities.

There will be no price increase at any of the campgrounds, according to Pisgah Hospitality owner Sutton Bacon, but using technology to give visitors quicker access to campgrounds, akin to an online check-in, will be implemented.

A small campground store will also be operated at the Davidson River campground and will sell items such as charcoal and tent stakes.

More information about the Pisgah Complex will appear in a future edition.
