Summer art classes at the Arts Academy of Transylvania Community Arts Council (TC Arts) are well underway. The building and grounds are humming with the sounds of young artists creating puppets, molding clay creatures and their habitat, sketching portraits and snapping photographs of interesting objects.
This year, TC Arts has expanded its Arts Academy program to include five one-week sessions of art classes during June and July. Session 1 took place June 13-17, and Session 2 begins Monday, June 20. Sessions 1 and 2 offered classes in songwriting, digital photography, clay creations, storybook art and bookmaking, drawing with Billy Smith and wheel throwing pottery classes.
Students attending Session 3, which begins July 11, will have several additional classes from which to choose, such as Drawing Brevard with Cindy Rehm, Broadway Bound! and Theater Workshop. Session 4 (July 18-22) and Session 5 (July 25-29) of this summer’s Arts Academy will see more new classes including classes in fiber arts, beginning ukulele, GarageBand and fashion.
Kathy King, executive director of TC Arts, explained: “We want our Arts Academy to offer a variety of classes to our young artists and to incorporate not only the visual arts, but also the performing arts and other art forms in our offerings. Classes such as Broadway Bound!, which is primarily a dance class, fiber arts, and the theater workshop help us accomplish this goal.”
Both morning and afternoon classes are available during Sessions 1-4 but Session 5 is comprised of morning classes only. Most classes in the morning sessions are planned for students ages 6 to 11, while the afternoon sessions are generally geared for older students, primarily ages 11 to 15.
Arts Academy faculty members are local artist-educators with significant experience in the arts and education. Cindy Rehm, TC Arts board president, said: “TC Arts is committed to engaging instructors for the Arts Academy who have meaningful experience both as artists and as educators so that our young artists receive an excellent foundation in the arts.”
The faculty for this summer Arts Academy includes: Sonia Arnold (theater); Sommer Coen (pottery and ceramics); Derrick Gardner (songwriting); Kathy King (photography); Michael Koz (animation); Kristen Pangle (dance); Cindy Rehm (drawing and painting, fashion); Cynthia Sealy (ukulele); and Billy Smith (drawing). The faculty is assisted this summer by intern Julia Lusk, a Brevard College student art major, and members of the Land of Waterfalls Camera Club.
