A week and a half after Election Day, the Transylvania County Board of Elections confirmed the results of the Nov. 8 local midterm election on Friday with no change significant from the initially announced unofficial results.

In a little more than an hour Friday, all ballots cast were certified and the totals show 16,318 votes were cast in the most recent election indicating 61.41 percent of registered voters in Transylvania County made their voices heard without incident.

A total of 5,952 votes were cast in 15 precincts on Election Day, 814 absentee ballots were received by mail before Nov. 8 and 9,432 ballots were submitted during early voting.

Friday’s official canvas of the results added 38 verified provisional ballots and 82 additional supplemental absentee by mail ballots which were postmarked by Election Day and received before Nov. 14.

“Our early voting numbers were actually about 100 short of 2018’s early voting numbers,” said County Elections Director Jeff Storey. “We did not have any issues with voting observers, with machines, equipment or our workers. Everything went pretty smooth.”

The final certified election results for the Nov. 8 local contests are as follows:

Transylvania County Board of Commissioners (Jake Dalton and Emmett Casciato elected)

•Dalton – 9,309 votes

•Casciato – 8,532 votes

•Lauren Wise – 7,535 votes

Board of Education (Tanya Dalton and Chris Wiener elected)

•Dalton – 8,508 votes

•Wiener – 7,795 votes

•Marty Griffin – 7,574 votes

•Paul Cooper – 6,918 votes

Transylvania County Sheriff (Chuck Owenby elected)

•Owenby – 8,744 votes

•William Hemphill – 6,686 votes

•Benny Frady – 798 votes

“The canvas is the key to making all of this work through transparency so everyone knows the results are accurate and counted correctly,” Storey said. “We had over a hundred election officials this year and they are the ones who make this all successful.”
