The Frying Pan Lookout tower stands far above the ground, well clear of any obstructive vegetation. Fire observers lived in the tower. Live-in towers across western North Carolina often had a wood stove for heating and cooking, cabinets for storage of food and personal belongings, and a cot. A pit toilet was located on the sites.
