Students Use Math Concepts To build Gingerbread Houses

Fifth grade student Kisa riddle displays her gingerbread project

The 5th grade students at Brevard Academy closed out the first semester with a gingerbread construction project that combined math concepts, science, and a little creativity as well. This is the second year Jane Bell, Brevard Acad-emy's 4th and 5th grade math teacher, has used the construction of gingerbread houses to practice many of the mathe-matical concepts the classes had studied in the preceding weeks.

"It is fascinating to see what the students create. Our finished projects ranged from houses to churches and more. We even had a hotel and a Japanese temple this year," Bell said.
