Victim Was UNC-A Student
The 22-year-old who was found dead at the bottom of Windy Falls on Sunday has been identified as James Karpinos, a UNC-Asheville student.
Karpinos, a senior sociology major from Chapel Hill, apparently slipped over the top of the falls on Saturday afternoon. The falls are part of the Horsepasture River, near Gorges State Park.
Karpinos and a friend were hiking in the woods at the time.
Karpinos was well known on campus as an experienced outdoorsman and as a trip leader for the university's Outdoors Program.
