Homer R. Steedly Jr. remembers the day in 1969 while serving in Vietnam that he came across a Vietnamese medic on a trail

Both men drew their guns. Steedly drew faster, killing the medic.

After looking at the dead man and checking out some of his belongings, he realized that the man was more than just another opponent on a battlefield.

The young medic, Hoang Ngoc Dam, was an artist and a writer. Steedly later came to realize that Dam was carrying love letters to his wife and well-crafted sketches of human anatomy.
