UNC-A Senior Exhibits Encaustic Paintings Paintings


"Hold Sway," an art exhibition featuring 18 works by UNC Asheville senior Celia Gray, will be on display through Aug. 5 in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery.

Gray employs a method known as encaustic painting, which uses pigmented beeswax in favor of traditional paints. The wax is kept in liquid form at around 200 degrees by hot plates while working. Surface effects and images are created using various methods of scraping, masking, incising, branding and buffing. The technique allows for added depth and a more tactile quality.
