Veteran Returns To Reconcile His Past

Pictured, from left, are Hoang Thi Tuoi (Hoang Ngoc Dam's sister), Hoang Minh Dieu (Dam's brother-in-law), Hoang Dang Cat (Dam's youngest brother), and Homer Steedly of Penrose. The two people in the framed photo are Hoang Ngoc Dam on the right and his other brother on the left, whose remains have never been located. This is a roadside memorial service that took place shortly after the remains of Hoang Ngoc Dam were recovered. (Courtesy Photo)

Editor's Note: A story in the May 15 edition of The Transylvania Times told of Vietnam War veteran Homer R. Steedly Jr., who was about to return to the country to meet the family of a man he killed in battle. The following is an account of Steedly's trip.

Homer R. Steedly Jr. of Penrose is back home in the quiet mountains of western North Carolina, seemingly a world away from the chaos of Vietnam's largest cities.

His recent two-week trip back to the country where he spent two tours of duty 39 years ago as an infantryman in the Vietnam War has left him a changed, and he hopes, better man.
