LaCrosse Case Reported In Transylvania


State public health officials on Tuesday announced the season's first two cases, including that of a Transylvania County child, of the mosquito-borne illness La Crosse viral encephalitis.

The other case involved a Haywood County child, and both children are recovering.

Dr. Ora Wells of the Brevard office of Hendersonville Pediatrics said he's alarmed by the news.

"I'm a little dismayed we already have two cases" this early in the summer, he said.

LaCrosse cases usually occur in late August and early fall.
