Hershel Sheldon Elam


Hershel Sheldon Elam, 86, of Mills River, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008 at his home. Born in Haysi, Va., he was the son of the late Charles Benton Elam and Winnie Elizabeth Puckett Elam.

His brothers, Cyril Fayne Elam and Charles Benton Elam, Jr., and his sister, Ula Rae Elam, also preceded him in death.

He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving in the US Air Force as crew chief while stationed at Fort Fisher.

He was a member of the Bovingdon Bunch, a group of World War II pilots.
