Damaged, Eroded Streambanks Receive Major Restoration Work

Mildred Powell of Rosman smiles when she looks across the road from her house and sees the pristine condition of Middlefork Creek.

It was once hard to see the creek just off U.S. 178 south of town, thanks to eroded banks and overgrown vegetation.

Hurricanes Frances and Ivan caused extensive damage throughout the area in 2004 and washed out the banks of the creek, undermining the area near the water and causing problems with sedimentation.

It also made it very difficult for the Powell family to maintain the banks on each side of the stream, which flows right through their land.
