Running For Office: An Expensive Risk


County Commissioner candidates learned that spending money on your campaign doesn't always equal winning.

As of Oct. 18, more than $22,000 was spent among seven candidates running for three seats on the County Commission, according to the Transylvania County Board of Elections.

The final totals will be available in November.

Incumbent Republicans Jason Chappell and Kelvin Phillips eventually retained their seats and will be joined by fellow Republican Mike Hawkins. The three beat challenges from Democrats Karla Atkinson, Sara Champion and Parker Pace, and write-in candidate Ken "Spud" Ayer...
