Jennifer Frick-Ruppert

Dr. Jennifer Frick-Ruppert, an associate professor of ecology and environmental studies at Brevard College, will address the Pisgah Group, NC Sierra Club at their May 28, meeting. Her presentation, "Human Effects On The Plants and Animals of the Southern Appalachians," will focus on some of the stories of the seasonal changes in animals and plants of the region, emphasizing their interactions and unique characteristics.

Frick-Ruppert has taught at Brevard College since 1997. She earned her Ph.D. in zoology from Clemson University in 1995. In May of 2006, she was promoted to executive director of the Appalachian Center for Environmental Education, a new initiative of Brevard College that focuses on regional environmental education. It provides student research opportunities and a variety of summer environmental programs.

Originally from South Carolina, Frick-Ruppert grew up with a love of nature and an appreciation for her surroundings. She was attracted to biology because of the opportunity it affords to study how life operates.

She has written scientific articles for Biological Bulletin, Invertebrate Zoology, and North Carolina Academy of Science. She has also authored two web sites for South Carolina Educational Television on the Natural History of the Saltmarsh and the Natural History of the Swamp. From 2001-2005, she wrote a regular column for The Transylvania Times and has just completed a full-length book "Mountain Nature: A Seasonal Natural History of the Southern Appalachians" to be published early in 2010.

The meeting will be held in Brevard at the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation building on South Broad Street at Varsity Street, one-half block south of the library. The meeting opens at 7 p.m. for light refreshments and socializing; the program begins at 7:30. Non-members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
