Teen Drowns In Lake

June 16, 2009

The victim of a drowning Friday at Fawn Lake in DuPont State Forest has been identified as Reed Gabriel Ignizio, 18, of Mills River.

He was employed at the Ingles store in Etowah, where a makeshift memorial has been erected for friends and co-workers to write their remembrances.

Ignizio worked at Ingles as a bookkeeper, had a good sense of humor and a large dose of compassion and was an excellent student, friends said.

He was home-schooled and was taking classes at Asheville-Buncombe Tech-nical Community College with plans to go on to UNC-Chapel Hill to continue his studies. Rescue divers recovered his body from the lake late Friday evening and pronounced him dead on the scene, according to Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney.

Mahoney described the incident as "horribly unfortunate."

Initial investigation and eyewitness accounts led the Sheriff's Office to determine the cause of death as an accidental drowning.

Investigators have said an autopsy has been ordered and the investigation will remain open until the results are made public to the sheriff's office.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is handling funeral arrangements for the Ignizio family.
