Gene Baker Brings Local History To Light

Gene Baker of Brevard has a deep appreciation for history, and he comes by it naturally.

Baker is a descendant of the Gillespie family, which is associated with the Gillespie rifles that were prominent locally produced products in the region's early days.

His father's mother was a Gillespie. That family has roots in this area dating back to the late 1790's.

Baker's mother was a member of the Holden family, which has a background in the Dunn's Creek area as far back as the 1840's.

Baker is the president of the Transylvania County Historical Society.
