School Student Dropout Numbers Fall

Transylvania County Schools reported a decrease in its student dropout numbers for the second year in a row.

In the 2009-10 school year, 44 students, 3.62 percent, dropped out of school. In 2008-09, 52 dropouts (4.19 percent) were reported.

So far this school year, 29 students have been reported as dropouts.

Dr. Scott Elliott, director of secondary education, presented dropout statistics to the Board of Education during its recent board meeting.

The state considers a student a dropout when he or she starts the school year but are no longer enrolled by day 20. This does not include students...
