Gardener Becky Young Will Lead Natural Backyard Tour

The Transylvania County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers (EMGV) invite the public to tour a “natural” back-yard to learn how to landscape without grass. Becky Young will lead the backyard tour to be held on June 14 in place of the regular monthly Master Gardener meeting.

Young will discuss how she has created a welcoming space for all kinds of nature to thrive, giving special emphasis to plants that support pollinators.

Since 2006 some pollinator species have seen a 96 percent drop in population. An avid photographer, Young will also be giving tips for photographing nature.

Young has previously created two outdoor classroom projects and received training in environmental education from Jacksonville State University in Alabama.

Her current and previous homes have both received certification from the National Wildlife Federation as Backyard Wildlife Habitats.

She writes about gardening and garden wildlife on her blog at nativebackyard.com.

The Transylvania County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers is a community service organization dedicated to putting knowledge to work through gardening education. Information about how to become a Master Gardener is available at the Cooperative Extension office in the Social Services Building in Brevard.

Young’s backyard tour will begin at 10 a.m. Meet at the Social Services Building at 9:30 a.m. to carpool.

For directions or more information, call the Cooperative Extension at 884-3109.
