Great Artists, Writers Had ‘Mental Illness’

Dozens of leading scientists, artists and other leaders in their fields suffered from various mental illnesses. Biographies of them, including Michelangelo, are on display in the county library.

Charlie Brown and Huck Finn have something in common – they came to life from the minds and pens of writers whose lives were significantly impacted by mental illness.

Charles M. Schultz overcame a lifetime of suffering with feelings of worthlessness, melancholy, panic, frustration and high anxiety to express the inner life of his unconventional brain through the colorful characters of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, Pig Pen, and of course, Snoopy.

Some say if Charles Schultz had been a “normal” person, he couldn’t have done it.
