Lake Toxaway Fire Causes Significant Damage To Home

Bitter cold temperatures, strong winds and blowing snow made the job of firefighters responding to a fire near Lake Toxaway more difficult than normal Monday night, according to Bobby Cooper, deputy chief of the Lake Toxaway Fire Department.

When firefighters answered a fire call at 7:12 p.m. at a house on Rosman Highway, the homeowner, Tony Fisher, was doing everything he could to keep the blaze at bay, Cooper said. Fisher lives in the house with his wife.

“When (Fisher) stepped off the ladder and dropped the garden hose that he had, the flames just started rolling out between the floor joists in the ceiling of the garage,” Cooper said.

The firefighters began working to determine the fire’s origin, but the house’s design made it difficult, Cooper said.

“There was some smoke in the upstairs, but we couldn’t tell exactly where it was coming from,” he said. “If you can’t see the fire, it’s hard to find. There was a lot of space in the house, and the fire was burning inside those voids.

“We never saw any fire outside of the house until it finally broke through a floor into the house.”

When the flames broke through the floor into the living room, the firefighters were able to begin to put it out.

It took around 30 minutes for firefighters to get the fire under control.

“There really was not that much damage in the actual living space, but it is going to take a lot of work to repair the house,” he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Lake Toxaway Fire Department, with assistance from the Transylvania County Fire Marshal’s Office, but Cooper said it does not appear to be caused by anything suspicious.

It seems that the fire was most likely caused by radiant heat from the wood stove in the house, Cooper said. Damage to the house is estimated at around $50,000, Cooper said.

Rosman Fire Rescue and the Cashiers-Glenville Fire Department also assisted.
