Signs Of Improving Economy Are Seen

With the first quarter of 2012 nearly complete, business leaders are seeing small but mildly encouraging signs of improvement in the slumbering local economy.

Real estate sales and construction have suffered since a good run of economic success ended in 2008.

Since, then, unemployment in the county has hovered around 9 percent, according to Mark Burrows, Transylvania County director of planning and economic development.

Realistically, he said, considering underemployment and those who have simply dropped out of the work force, he said the actual figure might be nearly 18 percent.
