Dunn’s Creek Church Rising From The Ashes

Dunn’s Creek Baptist Church will be rebuilt by this fall on the same ground where it was badly damaged by fire just a little more than one year ago.

The old church, a historic wooden structure on See Off Road, sat on a level spot just below an old cemetery that holds the remains of some of the county’s earliest families.

Next to the site is the Dunn’s Rock Community Center, where members of the congregation meet in the meantime.

Members and friends of the church gathered Saturday under a large green and white tent, prayed and sang “Amazing Grace” before moving to a muddy spot in the ground where the church once stood.

Michael Rogers, a former member of the Transylvania Board of Education, is the pastor of the church.

One of the special guests at the event was the Rev. Ray Aiken, pastor of Midway Baptist Church, which was rebuilt after an arson fire destroyed it.

The church is halfway between Brevard and Rosman and was rededicated last year.

Giving the invocation was Rev. Randy Barton, pastor of Anchor Baptist Church.

Also in attendance were pastors of other churches in the area, as well as County Commissioner Jason Chappell.

When the praying, preaching and singing was over, everyone in attendance moved a few yards away to the muddy hole in the ground where the church once stood and where it will rise again.

Rogers, who also owns Rogers Masonry, said the church is $90,000 short of its fundraising goal to complete the building. But he said he has no doubt that the goal will be reached.

“The Lord will provide,” he said.

Even now, the church has pledges of labor and material from many local individuals and companies who are in the construction business in the area.

Aiken said he was thrilled to be in attendance.

“We went through the same thing, and now our church is bigger and better than ever before,” he said. “This is truly a great day.”

Donations for the church fund may be sent to 2061 See Off Mountain Road, NC 28712.
