Once upon a time, high school football teams had what was called a manager, usually a smallish male volunteer who had a pocket full of extra cleats for shoes, a couple of towels and carried a bucket of water in and out of games. His real name might have been Marcus, but nickname was probably Cleat.

If there was a serious incident back in the day, the local doc was contacted, met the injured victim at the hospital and may well have taken a scalpel to his knee. arthroscopic surgery was still the stuff of science fiction.
