Local 4-H’ers Win State Dairy Cattle Judging – Transylvania County NC

A team of four Transylvania County 4-H’ers took first place in the junior division of the 2012 State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest held in Salisbury Nov. 15.

Team members were Lily Harris, Laura Smith, Calee Lance, and Zebulun Landreth. Harris led the team in points and earned first place junior individual in the state.

This was the first judging competition any of the team members had ever entered.

The team was coached by Dan Harris, who teaches agriculture classes at Brevard High School. 4-H Advisory Council member Casey Lance helped chaperone the group on their trip to the contest.

Plaques and ribbons were provided by the North Carolina Youth Dairy Foundation. The mission of this foundation is to develop and provide broad-based financial support for dairy youth programs and activities in North Carolina.

Each of the Transylvania 4-H Dairy Judging Team members plans to compete again next year.

Any youth ages 9 to 13 as of Jan. 1, 2013 are welcome to join the team. Practices start in September and end with the November contest. Meetings are at Brevard High School with occasional field trips to dairy farms. Participants learn life skills such as decision making, critical thinking, responsibility, and public speaking.
