Col. Robert J. Rankin, USAF Ret., 94, died March 14, 2013, at his winter home in Jenson Beach, Fla.

Born in Washington, D.C., he served in the United States Air Force for 32 years, and later retired to Brevard.

A fighter pilot in World War II, he was the first fighter pilot in Europe to shoot down five enemy planes in one day, earning the title of “Ace in a Day.” He was also the commander of six fighter squadrons, and air defense attaché in Thailand for three years.
