Ten Cent Poetry

“When I started playing in the Lower East Side, I would photo copy show invites, four to a page and print poems on the back,” Chelsea Lynn La Bate said. “Artists in the community coveted them. One friend said it was like popping open a fortune cookie. We’d get paper machéd with show announcements every night. . . but mine had the poetry. The copies cost ten cents. Ten cent poetry.”

Embracing that storybook moniker, Asheville’s La Bate will play the Phoenix Lounge at 8 p.m. May 8, but not before speaking with Backstage Pass about coming South and her intriguing new project.
