Vouchers Are Not The Answer

 


One sticking point between the North Carolina House and Senate is a proposal by the House to provide “opportunity scholarships,” more commonly referred to as “vouchers,” to low and middle income students. These vouchers would provide $4,200 a year of taxpayer money to students who would attend a private school.

While there are undoubtedly some very poor public schools in North Carolina, creating vouchers is not the solution to giving those students a better education. There is no evidence that students who leave poor public schools actually perform better when they are given vouche...
