Cradle Visitor Center Celebrating 25 Years – Pisgah Forest NC

Art Rowe had only been the Pisgah Forest district ranger for a short time when on April 17, 1985, well after nightfall, a neighbor knocked on his door to give him some bad news.

“He told me the Cradle was on fire,” Rowe recalls, “and by the time I got there it had pretty much been completely consumed by fire.”

Rowe, who served as district ranger from April 1, 1985 to 2001, was so new to the job that he’d only had the opportunity to visit the Interpretive Center one time before an electrical fire broke out and destroyed the building.
