Teacher Sets Trail Hike Record – Brevard NC

Former Transylvania County schoolteacher Matt Kirk set a record for the fastest self-supported hike of the 2,186-mile-long Appalachian Trail Wednesday by completing the hike in 58 days, 9 hours and 38 minutes.

Kirk’s fast pace averaged out to 37.4 miles per day, which proved just fast enough to break the previous record set by Mas-sachusetts resident Ward “Chip” Leonard 23 years ago, when he hiked the trail in 60.5 days.
