Former Brevard High Assistant Principal Sentenced-Brevard NC

Former Brevard High School assistant principal and athletic director Chadwick Hamby, 42, was sentenced to four years and three months in prison Wednesday for receiving child pornography.

The verdict stemmed from charges that Hamby received two sexually explicit videos of an 11-year-old girl between Aug. and Sept. 2011. Hamby received the videos from Deborah Lee Tipton, 45, a special-education teacher at The Mountain Community Schools, where Hamby served as principal for 12 years.

Tipton was sentenced to 18 years in prison for transmitting and possessing child pornography. Hamby received a much lighter sentence for cooperating with authorities and testifying against Tipton.

Hamby left Mountain Community School in June 2011 and was hired as athletic director at Brevard High a month later. On Feb. 22, 2012, Hamby resigned from BHS, one day before he turned himself into authorities after an arrest warrant was issued charging him with one felony count of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

As per the conditions of the their sentences, both Hamby and Tipton will be under supervised release for the rest of their lives after being released from prison. Hamby will also be required to register as a sex offender for a period of 15 years.
