Brevard High Band Wins Big With 2013 Show – Brevard NC

For the past two weekends, Brevard High School Marching Band, under the direction of Kenneth Franklin, has impressed judges and audiences alike with their 2013 show, “Over Throne.”

As the King, portrayed by our very own co-Drum Major, Tanner Hutchins, is overthrown, a musical battle ensues to regain his reign. The audience is led through the facets of battle with brass, woodwinds, percussion, drum line, and color guard providing visual and audible details of the fights and celebration of victory.

Brevard High School Marching Band has a long history of excellence. Hundreds of trophies and plaques line the walls of the band room providing the backdrop for Franklin to inspire, teach, and direct a most remarkable group of young women and men.

These students begin rehearsing eight to nine hours a day, two weeks before school even begins and continues to follow a rigid schedule of two and a half hours after school two and three days a week. They provide half-time entertainment at every home football game, as well as, pre-game shows at several away games. In addition to providing excellence at home, with pride and dignity they represent our county and our school system at four to five competitions every year. These young ambassadors of Transylvania County always make us proud.

One would think faced daily with walls of trophies and plaques would be daunting, but year after year more and more are added, with this year being no exception. With their 2013 show “Over Throne,” Brevard High School Marching Band has ranked exceptionally high in two competitions thus far.

The first was held in Pendleton, S.C. Sept. 21 where they marched in pouring rain. Despite the downpour and being drenched to the bone, our Brevard High School Marching Band performing in class 3A brought home 1st place Color Guard, 3rd place Band, and 4th highest score of all bands participating.

This past weekend, they competed at Enka High School in class 3AA. What a competition! Bands came from as far as Tennessee and competition was tough; but the marching pride of Brevard High School shone like the North Star bringing home seven trophies! The new additions proudly displayed are Performance, 1st place Drum Line, 2nd place Color Guard, 2nd place Drum Majors, 1st place for music, 1st place Band in class 3AA, and 4th place overall out of twenty-four bands participating in the contest.

For the next two weeks, our 86 member Brevard High School Marching Band will be rehearsing and preparing for their third competition being held at Western Carolina Univer-sity on Saturday, Oct. 12.
