Bill Berg

Grammy nominated drummer Bill Berg brings another unique trio for the next installment of "Jazz at 185 King Street." Friday, Nov. 15, from 8-11 p.m.

The jazz trio format allows listeners to enjoy the individuals in the group and their contribution to the overall sound. Three playing as "one" is the goal for ensembles that choose to play this repertoire and musical style. Tyler Kittle (sax) and Trevor Stoia (upright bass) will join Berg that evening.

Brevard resident Berg has played drums for over 50 years. In his decades of being a studio and performing musician, he has played and/or recorded with Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and Leo Kottke. He co-founded the '90s Grammy nominated group "Flim & the BB's." While living in Southern California he performed and recorded with the Wayne Johnson Trio, Bill Perkins (Stan Kenton), Ernie Watts (Buddy Rich) and the great guitar player, Howard Roberts. He maintains an active music schedule in Western North Carolina and enjoys the challenge of playing diverse styles of music.

Tenor saxophone Kittle received his degree in jazz studies from Western Carolina University. Before joining Mind Vs Target in July 2008, he was member of the popular touring Afro-beat group, The Afromotive. He has played throughout the U.S. and Europe with various groups and under various leaders. He speaks seven different languages and draws his inspiration from music from all over the world.

Stoia grew up in Asheville. He played drums in high school at T.C. Roberson and went on to N.C. State to study mechanical engineering. While at N.C. State he rented his first upright bass and started working on his chops. Upon realizing that music was his calling, he transferred to UNCA to study jazz and practice bass eight hours a day. Once he graduated, he began playing professionally and in the Brevard Philharmonic, as well as becoming a luthier.
