It has been 93 years since the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, was ratified. Even though women have been allowed to vote, not very many of them have been elected to public office. As a proportion of the population, women are still under-represented in most areas.

In Washington, D.C., just 20 percent of the senators are female, while only 17.9 percent in the House of Representatives are female. North Carolina has two females serving in the House and one serving in the Senate.
