Rock Gym Provides Indoor Climbing – Brevard NC

The Brevard Rock Gym is located in downtown Brevard across from the Transylvania County Library.

The Brevard Rock Gym focuses on giving its customers the opportunity to gain self-confidence and strength, mentally and physically. Climbers of all ages, skills, and abilities are welcomed at the rock gym.

The gym’s hours are from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4-8 p.m. on Friday, and 12-6 p.m. on Saturday, and closed Sunday and Monday. Tuesday nights, Brevard College Students have free admission to the gym, sponsored by the Campus Life Department and Outing Club at BC. The gym also offers teen and tween nights and climbing teams for children of all ages to enjoy.

Two members of the climbing team, Barrett Pauer, age 16, and Summer McCarthy, age 10, both agree that being on the Brevard Rock Climbing Team at the Rock Gym is a positive and encouraging.

“Being on the team, you help everybody while gaining self-strength and mentally and physically said Pauer. McMarthy is a well accomplished climber, being in the top 25 in the nation for her age group and she just started climbing competitively a year ago.

When she is climbing, she said, “I am able to release my stress and gain a positive outlook on life.”

The team and the coach have given her and all her teammates the support they need to be successful. The Brevard Rock Gym also offers a variety of special opportunities between summer camps and birthday parties that can give young climbers another outlet for activity and exercise throughout the year.

The newly formed Brevard College Rock Climbing team practices at the Rock Gym. The team consist of 19 Brevard College students. Next semester in the spring they will be having seven competitions, including one at the Brevard Rock Gym on March 15.

Jake Parker, a senior at Brevard College, said that he rock climbs because he is able to stay fit and get stronger while doing something that he enjoys.

The Austin family bought Brevard Rock Gym earlier this year in April. Cameron Austin is a professor at Brevard College and his son, Kendrick, enjoys competitive climbing in his free time. When asked why Austin chose to take over the gym, he stated it was to “maintain a venue for the climbing community in Brevard.” The gym remains a stronghold for the Brevard community to remain active in a “safe, controlled, and comfortable environment” said Austin.

When asked why he thought it was important for kids to climb, Austin said, “It is great exercise in a controlled environment that adds a special element of both safety and comfort for kids.”
