James Cooper Rickards III, 68, of Kernersville, N.C. died last Monday at home.

He grew up in Brevard, graduated in 1963 from Brevard Senior High School and earned a bachelors degree of fine arts at UNCG, class of 1968. He enjoyed a long career in county management and commercial real estate. A very talented artist, he began as a graphic designer for Guilford County in 1966 and advanced to the role of Assistant County Manager of Guilford County from 1973 to 1979. He then relocated to the coast and was County Manager of Carteret County from 1979 to 1984. Returning to the Triad in 1985, he worked with Maxwell and Associates of Greensboro until 1994. Jim devoted his remaining 19 years of service to Forsyth County and retired as Assistant Director of General Services in November 2013.

He loved the beach, aviation, building models, a good book, and if you didn’t know Jim was funny, you didn’t know Jim.

He was a loving father and will be dearly missed by sons J. Patrick, Joseph, and Jacob Rickards, daughter Nancy Macdonald, and grandchildren Morgan and Clarke Macdonald. Also surviving are siblings David and Elizabeth Noel Rickards of Brevard.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
