Pioneer Transylvania Teacher Remembered – Brevard NC

Many people remember Annie Marie Hailey as more than the first black teacher in Transylvania County.

They remember her courage and delight in being an educator, and her fellow teachers remember her as a disciplinarian, yet a refined woman with a sense of style.

In the 1960s, Margaret Kilstrom was a fellow teacher with Hailey, who died on Feb. 6, and while they taught in different departments, Kilstrom remembers her well.
