Comporium Communications officials in Rock Hill say they’ve resolved a problem with email accounts that affected many of the company’s customers over the weekend.

Late last week, Comporium detected a “tsunami of spam” that impacted its ability to filter illegitimate email messages from customers' accounts, said Matt Dosch, senior vice president.

“We saw a wave, an unusual amount of spam,” he said.

The problem hit Comporium customers on Thursday, Dosch said, and was largely fixed by Sunday.

The large amount of spam “clogged” Comporium's spam filters, which kept legitimate emails from reaching a customer’s inbox.

Dosch could not say how many customers were affected but said Comporium has tens of thousands of email customers.

The duration of the spam problem, starting last week, was longer than other email outages the company has had, he said.

Customers could still log into email accounts but could not receive new messages before the problem was fixed.

Comporium called in a team of employees to correct the issue over the weekend, Dosch said.

Internally, the company also experienced email issues, he said.

Because customers could not receive new messages, the company could not email an alert to notify email users of the problem.

Over the weekend, Comporium saw a high volume of calls into its customer service lines, Dosch said. Any customers still experiencing problems should call the company's technical support line at 1-866-843-9444.
