New Paradigm Homes broke ground on two new houses in Brevard on Thursday. The houses, located on West Probart Street, are less than one half mile from the center of downtown Brevard. Each house has two bedrooms and two baths in a little over one thousand square feet. Construction is underway and is expected to be complete early this fall.

Intended to fill a need in Brevard's residential market, these homes are designed to provide energy efficient, low maintenance, one-story living in an open and efficient floor plan. One unique feature of these houses is what the developers are calling a "Plus Space." A flexible area at the center of the plan, more than a dozen options have been developed for buyers to customize the plan to meet their needs. Buyers can choose from options including a home office, full size laundry room, exercise room, built-in bunk beds, a powder room or wet bar and wine cellar, allowing these house designs to meet a wide range of buyer needs.

"We've designed custom homes in Western North Carolina for almost 20 years," said architect Doug Harris. "We understand what people are looking for in terms of quality, character and function, but we also know not everyone wants or needs a 3 or 4 thousand square-foot house, 15 minutes up a steep road.

"I've talked to many people who discover Western North Carolina and Brevard and start their search for a home wanting to be in town. The reality is there are very few houses in town that don't need a lot of work or lack the quality or features people are looking for. They end up compromising on their wish list and buying miles from the town they want to be a part of. There are also a lot of our clients who built the big house up on the mountain, who, 15 years later are looking for something with less maintenance and more convenience but the same quality. People want to be a part of a community," said Harris.

New Paradigm Homes was founded out of a shared interest among its principals in rethinking the kinds of houses being built today. Developer and general contractor Travis Fowler, with First Victory, architect Doug Harris, with Harris Architects, and builder Darren McCall, with Tucker Creek Construction, bring years of experience to this new venture. While working together on other projects, the team discovered a common belief that the home building industry had not responded to changes in both the market place and the home buying public's needs, creating a real opportunity. New Paradigm Homes' mission is to offer a high quality, energy and space efficient product in walkable, in-town neighborhoods in Western North Carolina.

The average new household in this country is no longer the traditional family with 2.3 children.

Non-traditional households, including empty nesters, singles and single parents with children at home, now make up a majority of home buyers, while most new houses continue to be designed to meet the traditional family's needs for more space.

"We are excited to begin construction on a new product that responds to today's buyer's demand for well designed, energy efficiency, smart homes in neighborhoods with amenities in close proximity and a sense of community" said Fowler. Additional projects in Brevard are in development, and the group is looking at projects in surrounding areas as well.

Mike Carrick, of Carrick Properties, who shares New Paradigm's view of today's buyers and the need to respond to the changes in the marketplace, has been selected to market the houses.
