Taking A Liking To Beneficial Lichens

 


At the Transylvania Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Clinic on Wednesdays, clients regularly bring in samples of unhealthy-looking shrub and tree branches with greenish-grey scaly or hairy patches. Often times the client refers to this material as “fungus”, and suspects it is the cause of the plant’s problems or even killing it.

In actuality, what is growing on the plant is called lichen and chances are very good that it is not damaging the tree or shrub. Lichens are not parasites on woody plants, but merely use the bark as a medium on which to grow. Lichens may rest directl...
