FOTAS, The Friends of Transylvania Animals, has launched a campaign to promote and raise money for a spay and neuter program for dogs and cats.

FOTAS President Bill Briggs said that while FOTAS will continue to support the Animal Shelter, "We realized that in order to fulfill our mission of helping animals in our county, it's vital to reduce the increasing population of stray and neglected animals."

Under the new program, FOTAS will distribute vouchers to the Animal Shelter and to selected veterinarians who will decide which residents truly need vouchers. The vouchers are to be used at Noah's ARC for spaying or neutering Transylvania County residents' pets. The program is underway and there are already 24 animals spayed or neutered, contributing to reducing the future number of unwanted puppies and kittens.

In light of their new mission, FOTAS is phasing in a new name that matches the acronym FOTAS, but better reflects the campaign, "Friends Of Transylvania Animals."

Briggs said, "We are the same, hardworking organization that helped raise money to build a clean, spacious Animal Shelter, and we will continue to seek broad community support." He added, "We are impressed with the generosity of the citizens of Transylvania County."
