When former University of North Carolina Tarheel basketball coach Dean Smith passed away last weekend, the state truly lost a legend. Smith was a great coach and a great man.

In the world of sports, coaches are judged by how many games they win. By that measure alone, Smith is among the greatest. When he retired, he had two NCAA titles and more wins, 879, in men’s Division I basketball than any other coach.
