School Grading System Fails


On Feb. 5 public schools throughout North Carolina received their “grades.” Unfortunately, these grades are deeply flawed, tell us nothing new, and affirm the inverse correlation between poverty and low standardized test scores.

One problem with these grades is that they are based on one test: end-of-grade tests. (High school scores are based on end-of-course tests and graduation rates.) That’s it. It is the height of idiocy to determine the quality of a complex institution such as a school, which has multiple internal and external variables that contribute to its success or failure...
