Council To Decide On Manager Later – Brevard NC

Interim City Manager Jim Fatland said city council won’t tackle hiring a full-time manager to replace Joe Moore until after the upcoming budget process is over.

Fatland, who has been the city’s finance director since early 2012, was scheduled to be sworn in as interim manager tonight during the regular council meeting.

On Monday, March 30, after a work session to discuss the proposed $8.95 million loan from the state to renovate the city’s wastewater plant, council went into a closed session — requested by Councilman Maurice Jones — to discuss a personnel matter. After roughly two and a half hours in the closed session, the council recessed. They went back into the closed session Tuesday morning for about 45 minutes. After the closed session, the council accepted Moore’s resignation.

Fatland said he was “surprised” when he received a call “late Monday night” about whether he was willing to be the interim city manager.

Fatland said he told Mayor Jimmy Harris Tuesday that he was “willing” to take the position and wanted the city to move at a “steady pace’ on the many issues it faces.

Fatland is originally from California.

He received a bachelor of science degree in accounting and finance from Cal Poly University in Pamona. For 17 years he worked as a finance officer in San Bernardino, Marin and Orange counties in California.

While in North Carolina, Fatland has worked as a finance officer for Highlands, Tryon, Monroe and Buncombe County’s Metropolitan Sewer District. He also served for a time as Tryon’s town manager.

Fatland and his wife, Linda, have three adult children.

Fatland said it’s “important” city employees know that while he is interim manager he will not be operating as a “baby sitter.” He said he plans to work with council “to get through the issues in an expedited fashion and hopefully produce an end result that the community of Brevard will be pleased with.”
