The Blue Devil boys' tennis team opened the state 2-A dual-team tournament Tuesday with a 6-0 victory over visiting Surrey Central.

The first two singles matches went Brevard's way without a loss in straight set victories.

Joseph Schrader won 6-0, 6-0 over Zach Cochran at number-one, while Liam Baer won by the same scores over Tanner Moss at number-two singles.

Andy McCall won 6-3, 6-4 at number-three singles over senior Kirk Needham, while Joe Roberts won 6-1, 6-0 at number-four over Jose Montero.

McCall rallied from a 2-3 deficit in the first set to win four straight.

Charles Kang won a 6-1, 6-1 match over Weston Mosely at number-five singles, leaving Cam Wilson to wrap up the day.

Wilson fought a marathon third-set tie-breaker over Cole Leonard.

Wilson dropped the first set 5-7, then came back to win the second set 6-3.

That forced the third-set tie-breaker, which Wilson won 10-7, giving Brevard the 6-0 victory and negating any need to play doubles.

The Blue Devils (13-0) will now have to travel to Shelby (9-0) Tuesday, May 5 for the second round.

The Lions were 9-0 winners in the opening round over East Lincoln.

Three Blue Devils will play for individual regional championsips Friday at BC: Joseph Schrader at singles, and Andy McCall and Joe Roberts in doubles. Play starts Friday at 2 p.m.
