Pottery Camp Is Underway – Brevard NC

Mountain Roots Pottery Camp is providing local and visiting youngsters the opportunity to play in the clay this summer at the Transylvania County Arts Council in Brevard. The day camp is being held two different weeks — July 13-17 and July 27-31.

The camp will host two half day sessions: a morning session from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for ages 5-10 and an afternoon session from 1:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 11-15.

During the week students are introduced to the properties of clay and have the opportunity to learn and practice basic hand-building skills. These include the pinch, coil, and slab techniques. In addition, the basics of clay sculpture will be introduced.

The afternoon classes for older students include both hand building and wheel throwing instruction.

Students from both sessions have the opportunity to hand-paint glazes on some of their creations on the last day of camp. All other ware is glazed in food safe glazes and will be available for pick-up at the TC Arts Council two weeks after camp. This year’s campers have enjoyed making monsters, bird baths, coil bowls, wheel thrown projects and more!

To register, call the Transylvania Community Arts Council at (828) 884-2787 or download all the registration forms at http://www.mountainroots.org.
