Brevard Yoga will begin offering a new monthly charitable donation-based class to benefit SAFE, Inc. of Transylvania County. Brevard Yoga has generously offered to donate their space to help raise awareness and involvement to an important and essential community organization.

Since 1985, SAFE, Inc. has been providing shelter, programs and services to people impacted by domestic and/or sexual violence. Through SAFE, all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault will be provided safety, treated with dignity and respect and given the opportunity to create long lasting changes that will result in a life free of violence and abuse.

The instructor for this class, Ashleigh Gurtler, is a recent transplant from New York City, where she studied and taught both traditional Hatha yoga and Trauma-Sensitive yoga. While this donation-based class will be taught in the traditional style, Trauma-Sensitive yoga is the approach she takes when teaching her current weekly class at Stacey's House for both the residents and the staff. This approach differs from a typical yoga class in that its main objectives are to help participants feel comfortable in their own bodies and feel confident in the fact that they have complete control over what they are doing with their own bodies at all times. Through breathing, strengthening, stretching and resting, participants can experiment with making choices and exploring what it's like to live in their bodies while in a safe, supportive environment. SAFE, Inc.

After spending time at Stacey's House and getting to know some of the residents and the incredibly hard-working, passionate staff, Gurtler wanted to do anything she could to bring more awareness and support to this organization. Her hope in starting a monthly fundraising class is to encourage the community of Transylvania County to learn more about this invaluable organization while experiencing the very practice that has already proven to be beneficial and transformative for the women at Stacey's house.

The first class will be held Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and is open to all levels and abilities. Suggested donation for this fundraising class is $5-$20. Brevard Yoga is located at 29 W. French Broad St., Suite 211.
